Today We Face a Historic Chance to Connect Europe with Ukraine – Dalia Grybauskaitė

However, it has become clear today that association with Europe is a strategic choice for Ukraine. So stated the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, at the 10th Annual Meeting of Yalta European Strategy “Changing Ukraine in a Changing World: Factors of Success” that is taking place in Yalta’s famous Livadia Palace between September 20 and 22.
“I am very happy to see the sunlight through the window. And it’s symbolic that it appeared at the very moment we began a conference focused on the destiny of Europe and Ukraine”, Mrs. President began her presentation. “Ukraine is currently the centre of attention of the European Union and all Europeans. Europe is at the centre of Ukrainian politics. The Ukrainian President has made it clear that an association with Europe is the strategic choice for Ukraine. That choice has been confirmed today by both those in power and those in opposition. We are witness to decisive support of Ukraine’s aspirations towards Europe by both the European Union and all Europeans.”
The President of Lithuania went on to make the point that Ukraine needs to consolidate its political will, and to be confident in its ability “to think and feel like a European country”. There remain clear and specific tasks that Ukraine needs to complete to be ready for further European integration. The country needs to create legal guarantees that elections will be clear and transparent, to ensure equal conditions for all political parties and groups and, to establish a system of justice based on the principle of the rule of law.
The President then stressed that Europeans understand the pressure that is currently being experienced by Ukraine, which is faced with the threat of “sanctions imposed by countries which don’t want an association of Ukraine with Europe.” She made the point that Europe is not pressuring Ukraine in any way, and will never do so. In her view these issues should be solved by consensus based on the WTO standards. “Europe will support the aspiration to cooperate but will never forcefully push Ukraine towards an association. Countries cannot be forced into association with the European Union,” she said.
“The pressure is growing. I hope that Ukraine has the strength to resist this pressure. Ukraine must be the architect of its own future. It’s a very large, strong and important country and it must make its own, independent decision about what kind of a country it wants to be be and what kind of future it will have,” President Grybauskaitė finished.
